SIG Joins “Upcycling-Upstyling” Project toward Sustainability from Recycled Products
SIG Combibloc Thailand is a leader in providing systems and solutions for aseptic packaging to bring food and beverage products to consumers around the world in a safe, sustainable and cost-effective way. Our unique technology and outstanding innovation capability make it possible to provide a one-stop solution for a wide range of products to meet the changing needs of consumers.
As a manufacturer trying to keep up with the challenge to create sustainable packaging, we are creating new SIG products that can be used in daily life while reducing the environmental impact. This is in line with the global approach to sustainability called “WAY BEYOND GOOD”.
SIG has joined the Upcycling Upstyling project with the support of PTT Global Chemical (GC), which involves the collection of used beverage cartons (UBCs) and recycling them to yield materials suitable for making new products, which is a process known as ‘Upcycling’.
In the eco-design process, leading designers create commercially-viable products by using recycled UBCs combined with plastic and aluminium foil. This also increases the awareness of consumers and meets their environmental needs by helping to reduce waste and create a more sustainable environment.
Mr. Vatcharapong Ungsrisawasdi, Country Manager, SIG Thailand, said, “Joining the Upcycling and Upstyling Project is another effort by SIG to communicate the idea that everyone in society can help to reduce the negative environmental effects of plastic and aluminium foil waste, even from UBCs. Used plastic and aluminium foil from UBCs are not waste, but raw materials that can be recycled. By sorting and managing the UBCs properly, they can be turned into valuable and useful products. This is a sustainable practice that will create a positive impact on the environment and improve the quality of life.”
Both in Thailand and worldwide, SIG Combibloc is committed to sustainability. We cooperate with governments, the private sector, and more than 300 communities and local agencies across Thailand in the organization of various projects that fulfil SIG’s environmental sustainability goals:
To be a responsible company: our responsibility to business, society, and the environment
To produce responsible products: a focus on inventing and creating sustainable innovations and solutions
To employ responsible sourcing: using environmentally-certified, quality raw materials to produce packaging and promotional materials to help to create a sustainable environment throughout the food chain
In addition, SIG’s packaging has also been certified by the Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization (TGO). SIG Combibloc packaging has received the Reduction Carbon Footprint Mark award nine years in a row as we have reduced our greenhouse gas emissions by more than 2% in the production of carton packs .The reduction is consistent with the national policy of Thailand to reduce the carbon footprint by 20-25% by 2030. SIG plans both short-term and long-term strategies with our customers and partners to promote and produce environmentally-friendly packaging in line with the company’s policies and visions.
